Last Shilling Standing: Mogadishu Traders Turn Their Back on Somalia’s Worn-Out Currency

Parts of Mogadishu have effectively sidelined the Somali shilling, with traders and public transport operators refusing to accept the country’s last circulating banknote. The move has disrupted daily life for low-income residents and intensified pressure on the government to fast-track a long-delayed currency reform.

The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly condemned what it described as criminal attacks carried out by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the northern and southern Kordofan regions, which targeted civilian facilities and humanitarian convoys belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP).

In an official statement, Somalia said the attacks resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, describing the incidents as grave violations of international humanitarian law and all relevant international conventions governing the protection of civilians and humanitarian operations.

The Somali government stressed that targeting civilian infrastructure and humanitarian aid convoys constitutes a serious breach of legal and moral obligations, particularly amid Sudan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Somalia called on the RSF to immediately halt all such violations, fulfill its legal and ethical responsibilities to protect civilians, and ensure the safe, unconditional, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected populations. The statement also urged full compliance with the Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians in Sudan.

Furthermore, the Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its unwavering support for the unity, sovereignty, security, and stability of the Republic of Sudan. It expressed solidarity with the Sudanese people and endorsed regional and international efforts aimed at ending the conflict through peaceful means.

Somalia also warned against foreign interference in Sudan’s internal affairs, cautioning that external involvement could further escalate the conflict and worsen the humanitarian suffering faced by the Sudanese civilian population.

The statement underscores Somalia’s continued commitment to upholding international humanitarian principles and standing in solidarity with nations affected by conflict and humanitarian crises.
