The Federal Government of Somalia has taken a major leap forward in healthcare delivery with the official opening of a completely renovated National Health Laboratory. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Health and Human Services, Dr. Ali Haji Adam Abubakar, described the event as a milestone for both the ministry and the Somali people.
The laboratory has been successfully upgraded from a basic Level 1 facility to a fully equipped Level 3 laboratory. In the past, many complex diagnostic tests had to be sent overseas, causing delays and additional costs. Now, with advanced equipment and specialized facilities, Somali doctors can diagnose and monitor a wider range of diseases locally. The minister noted that this improvement will save time, save lives, and strengthen national health security.
Alongside the laboratory, the Ministry of Health also inaugurated two new office buildings to accommodate its growing responsibilities. According to Dr. Ali Haji, these structures will give staff the space and resources needed to coordinate health services more effectively across the country.
The minister emphasized that these projects are only the beginning. Several other initiatives are planned for this year, all aimed at rebuilding a healthcare system that meets the standards of nations that have not faced the same challenges as Somalia. “We are working tirelessly,” he said, “to reach the level of countries that have highly advanced medical regulation and service delivery.”
During his address, Dr. Ali Haji also acknowledged the outgoing director of the ministry, who completed three years of dedicated service and is now moving to a new role in another ministry. He thanked the director for his contributions and wished him success.
In his closing remarks, the minister made a direct promise to the Somali people: “We will continue to strengthen the capacity of our healthcare workers and improve the quality of every clinic and hospital in the country.”
