Parts of Mogadishu have effectively sidelined the Somali shilling, with traders and public transport operators refusing to accept the country’s last circulating banknote. The move has disrupted daily life for low-income residents and intensified pressure on the government to fast-track a long-delayed currency reform.

The Director General of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Yusuf Hassan Isaaq (Wadani), officially opened a CCA Workshop in Mogadishu aimed at strengthening coordination in disaster response and improving emergency response systems.

The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA), focuses on enhancing collaboration among institutions involved in addressing droughts, floods, and other humanitarian emergencies. Discussions centered on unifying efforts to ensure timely, efficient, and well-coordinated responses to disasters affecting communities across the country.

In his opening remarks, Director General Yusuf Hassan Isaaq emphasized the importance of coordinated government action, effective use of existing systems, and strong institutional leadership in responding to emergency situations. He highlighted the need for improved preparedness and integrated approaches to mitigate the impact of disasters and protect vulnerable populations.

The workshop was attended by senior officials, including Dr. Ismail Jimcaale, Head of Projects at the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), representatives from Somalia’s Federal Member States, and directors from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

During the sessions, participants held in-depth discussions on the use of identification and registration systems, mechanisms for aid delivery, particularly cash-based assistance, and strengthening data coordination and government leadership in emergency response efforts.

The workshop concluded with a strong emphasis on the role of the Social Protection System in enhancing emergency responses. Participants underscored the importance of closer collaboration between government institutions and development partners to build resilient, responsive, and sustainable systems capable of addressing humanitarian crises effectively.
