African Union condemns deadly drone strike in Goma

The African Union has strongly condemned a drone strike that hit the eastern city of Goma in the North Kivu region, resulting in the deaths of civilians, including humanitarian workers.

In a statement issued by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the continental body expressed deep concern over reports that the drone attack caused civilian casualties and damaged residential homes in the city.

The commission said it strongly condemns any attack that endangers the lives of civilians and humanitarian workers, noting that such actions violate international humanitarian law.

According to reports, the drone strike occurred on Wednesday when an unmanned aerial vehicle hit a building used to house aid workers in Goma. At least three people were killed in the attack, including a staff member from UNICEF.

The African Union called on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could further escalate tensions in the region. It also stressed the importance of protecting civilians and humanitarian personnel operating in eastern parts of the country.

The organization said it supports efforts to establish the facts surrounding the incident through an independent investigation, while also emphasizing the need to respect ongoing mediation initiatives and ceasefire agreements aimed at restoring peace and stability.

“The African Union remains fully committed to working with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, regional partners, and the international community to achieve a sustainable political solution and lasting peace,” the statement said.

Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has faced years of armed conflict involving government forces and several rebel groups. In recent months, fighting has intensified, particularly between Congolese forces and the March 23 Movement in North Kivu, especially in areas surrounding the city of Goma.
