Somalia’s main opposition coalition will join President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s national dialogue in Mogadishu, a key move to ease political deadlock as the country faces a 2026 election deadline.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says the Benadir Regional Council elections in Mogadishu mark a historic shift from indirect rule to direct, constitutional voting, testing wider one-person, one-vote reforms.
“This is not an ordinary conference,” said one attendee arriving from Mogadishu. “People are coming here because they feel the system is stuck—and this may be one of the last chances to reset it peacefully.”
