Somalia’s SODMA hosts UN Humanitarian Coordinator to accelerate Food Security and Disaster Preparedness Efforts

The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) today hosted George Conway, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, at its Mogadishu headquarters. The high-level meeting focused on strengthening and accelerating the implementation of the Food Security Contingency Planning Program (FSCCP), amid persistent drought conditions and rising concerns over food shortages in the country.

SoDMA Chairman, Maxamuud Macallin Cabdulle, welcomed Conway and highlighted the critical need for coordinated government and international efforts to address emergencies related to food insecurity and natural disasters. He emphasized that timely planning and resource mobilization are essential to mitigate the humanitarian impact on vulnerable communities.

The discussion included strategies to improve coordination among various stakeholders, including federal agencies, international partners, and local actors. The Food Security Director at the Office of the Prime Minister also attended the meeting and underscored the importance of aligning efforts to maximize efficiency and ensure that assistance reaches the most affected populations.

Both parties agreed on establishing a joint committee to oversee, coordinate, and monitor the implementation of FSCCP initiatives. The committee will ensure that preparedness measures, early response actions, and monitoring mechanisms are effectively applied across regions most affected by drought and other hazards.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance collaboration between the federal government and international organizations, with the goal of improving Somalia’s resilience to humanitarian crises. SoDMA and UN representatives reaffirmed their commitment to proactive planning, rapid response, and community engagement to address the impact of droughts, food insecurity, and other natural disasters in the country.

The meeting signals Somalia’s continued prioritization of disaster preparedness and the importance of partnerships in safeguarding communities against ongoing and emerging humanitarian challenges.
