Former Somali president condemns arrest of tuk-tuk drivers in Mogadishu

Former Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has strongly condemned the arrest of several tuk-tuk drivers in Mogadishu, saying the drivers were peacefully expressing their grievances over rising living costs and economic hardships.

In a statement, the former leader said young Somalis working as tuk-tuk drivers deserve support and understanding rather than arrests, noting that many of them rely on the job to support their families while operating under difficult economic conditions.

“I strongly condemn the abuses and arrests carried out against tuk-tuk drivers in Mogadishu at a time when they were peacefully expressing their complaints about inflation and the tough living conditions they are struggling with,” Farmaajo said.

He called on the government to stop what he described as the suppression and detention of citizens who are exercising their right to express their concerns. Instead, he urged authorities to engage in dialogue and respond constructively to the drivers’ grievances.

Farmaajo also appealed for the immediate release of the detained drivers, arguing that their fundamental rights are protected under the country’s constitution and other national laws.

The statement comes amid growing concerns among sections of the public about the rising cost of living in the Somali capital, where many young people depend on informal transport services such as tuk-tuks for their livelihoods. Observers say addressing economic pressures and engaging with affected groups through dialogue could help ease tensions and prevent further disputes between authorities and members of the public.
