Israeli Foreign Minister Visits Somaliland Following Recognition Announcement, Raising Regional Concerns

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has visited Somaliland, nearly two weeks after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially recognized Somaliland as an independent state, according to Israeli media reports.

The move has sparked widespread international debate and concern, with numerous countries and organizations warning that the recognition could affect stability in the Horn of Africa and challenge the principle of Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Diplomatic sources speaking to Israel’s i24NEWS reported that during his visit, Minister Saar is expected to meet with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, also known as Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cabdillaahi (Cirro). Discussions are anticipated to focus on diplomatic relations, political cooperation, and security and economic matters.

While Israeli media have provided details about the visit, Somaliland authorities have not officially confirmed the news, and no press statement has been released by the presidency or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Somalia has repeatedly expressed strong opposition to any move recognizing Somaliland, describing such actions as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.

The visit by Israel’s Foreign Minister comes at a time when the Horn of Africa is facing political and strategic challenges, heightening regional sensitivities over foreign involvement and diplomatic recognition.
