President Mohamud signs law establishing the Independent National Human Rights Commission
The Federal Government of Somalia has officially formed its Human Rights Commission after President Hassan Sheikh endorsed the legislation, following Parliamentary approval. The commission will play a central role in promoting justice and protecting citizens’ rights.
The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today signed into law the establishment of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, following the approval of its members by both Houses of the Federal Parliament.
The signing of the law marks a major milestone in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen human rights protection, accountability, and good governance. President Hassan Sheikh stated that the creation of the Commission demonstrates the Federal Government’s strong commitment to safeguarding human dignity and ensuring that the rights of Somali citizens are upheld.
He commended the close cooperation between the Parliament and the Executive Branch, noting that their coordination was essential in the successful passage, legal review, and finalization of the legislation in accordance with the Constitution and Islamic principles.
The President also praised the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development for its leadership in spearheading the legal and technical processes that made the Commission’s formation possible. He described the newly established Commission as an institution well-prepared to carry out its national responsibilities with professionalism and integrity.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud concluded by praying for the success of the Commission members, reminding them of the significant responsibility entrusted to them. He emphasized the importance of their role in promoting justice, enhancing accountability, protecting citizens’ rights, and strengthening governance rooted in the rule of law.
