Somalia’s South West State Diverts Anniversary Funds to Drought Aid
Somalia’s South West State has cancelled its founding anniversary events and redirected the budget to drought relief, with President Laftagareen urging aid groups, businesses and the diaspora to support vulnerable communities.
Somalia’s South West State will scrap its upcoming founding anniversary festivities and redirect the budget to drought relief, President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed “Laftagareen” announced Thursday.
Confronted by a drought crippling livelihoods and livestock, Laftagareen declared saving lives must come first. “We decided to transform the anniversary celebrations into a humanitarian relief campaign,” he said after assessing the crisis.
The president issued a broad appeal for support from aid groups, businesses, and the diaspora to bolster the emergency response for vulnerable communities. He pledged his administration’s full commitment to the ongoing relief effort.
