An undisclosed number of Alshabaab militants were on Saturday night killed in Lower Shabelle in an  an operation  by Somali National Army commandos , a government official told Radio Dalsan.

The commandos raided an Alshabaab military camp in Yaaq  Doomar village the latest in a series  of such raids in the last few weeks.

Local government officials said that the aim of the raid was to destroy the base and neutralize the militants’ capacity to organize and carry out regional attacks.

The government however is not clear how many militants were killed.

The raid by the US trained  Alpha group came in the wake of an attack by the militant group in Leego Lower  Shabelle where 3 SNA soldiers were wounded.

Although Alshabaab has significantly lost ground to the SNA and Amisom operations  they continue to target government and foreign interests in Somalia.
