Last Shilling Standing: Mogadishu Traders Turn Their Back on Somalia’s Worn-Out Currency

Parts of Mogadishu have effectively sidelined the Somali shilling, with traders and public transport operators refusing to accept the country’s last circulating banknote. The move has disrupted daily life for low-income residents and intensified pressure on the government to fast-track a long-delayed currency reform.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Somali Armed Forces, marked the 66th anniversary of the army’s founding with a series of inauguration ceremonies and inspections at key military installations on Sunday.

The President officially laid the foundation stone for a major new facility at the Fiyaamo base – the Armed Forces Orphanage Centre. The project is specifically designed to care for children of the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending the nation. Officials say the centre forms part of a broader government strategy to improve military welfare infrastructure.

During the tour, President Hassan Sheikh also cut ribbons on several other critical facilities aimed at modernising army operations. These include a new logistics command headquarters, a cutting-edge communications and technology leadership centre, and an army support centre. Authorities expect these projects to significantly transform command efficiency and overall military effectiveness.

Addressing the significance of the day, the president praised military officers and personnel for their unwavering dedication and sacrifice. He stressed that his administration prioritises the wellbeing of soldiers and their families, particularly the orphans of national heroes.

The newly unveiled technology hub is expected to help Somalia’s armed forces keep pace with global military advancements. The ceremonies coincided with April 12 – the exact date in 1960 when the Somali National Army was first established.
