The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting to review and accelerate the implementation of the drainage and sewerage system in the capital city, Mogadishu.
During the meeting, detailed briefings were presented by the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, the Banadir Regional Administration, and technical experts from the NAGAAD project, covering the technical design, scope, and phased implementation plan of the drainage system.
Banadir Regional Governor, Hasan Mohamed Hussein, highlighted that initial blocked drainage channels have been successfully reopened. However, he emphasized the urgent need to construct new and durable drainage facilities to prevent recurring floods, which pose serious risks to both life and property.
The Ministry of Finance outlined the planned budget allocation, the expected contributions from the Somali government, and the role of the World Bank in supporting this major project, which spans multiple cities across the country.
Other ministries involved, including those of Blue Economy, Civil Aviation and Air Transport, Internal Security, and Defense, presented reports on their roles in national infrastructure projects and recommendations on coordination to ensure efficiency.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre stressed the importance of restoring the aesthetic and functional value of the capital by reopening old drainage channels and installing high-quality water-carrying pipelines. He instructed all relevant agencies to urgently mobilize and implement the project, underlining its national importance.
The capital’s drainage and sewerage project directly impacts public safety, sanitation, and overall urban development. It is expected to reduce flood risks, curb waterborne diseases, protect the environment, and safeguard critical infrastructure such as roads, housing, and commercial areas.
The Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the project is successfully implemented, marking a major step toward making Mogadishu a safe, clean, and investment-ready capital.
