Somali Forces Secure Jilib Marka in Anti–Al-Shabaab Operation: What You Need to Know
In Summary

Somali security forces have taken full control of Jilib Marka in Lower Shabelle after an intelligence-led operation against Al-Shabaab, boosting efforts to restore state authority in a key contested area.

Somali government forces have taken full control of the Jilib Marka area in the Lower Shabelle region following a carefully planned and coordinated security operation aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab presence in the area.

The operation was carried out jointly by the elite Gor-Gor Commando Forces, the 14 October Brigade, and the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), underscoring close coordination between Somalia’s military and intelligence services.

Government forces entered and secured Jilib Marka after receiving intelligence indicating the presence of Al-Shabaab militants who had been using the area as a hideout. Upon learning of the approaching operation, the militants reportedly fled the area without engaging in direct combat.

The operation was conducted in the Jilib Marka area of Lower Shabelle, a region that has long been targeted by Al-Shabaab due to its strategic location and proximity to key supply routes.

Lower Shabelle remains one of the most contested regions in Somalia, frequently used by Al-Shabaab to collect illegal taxes, intimidate civilians, and plan attacks against government and civilian targets. Securing areas such as Jilib Marka is a critical component of the federal government’s broader campaign to weaken the group’s operational capacity and restore state authority.

According to security sources, the operation was planned in advance and supported by intelligence assessments from NISA. After clearing the area, allied units of the Somali National Army were deployed to maintain security and prevent the militants from returning.

Residents of Jilib Marka welcomed the arrival of government forces, expressing relief after years of alleged extortion, intimidation, and coercion by Al-Shabaab militants. Locals said the presence of national forces has restored a sense of safety and normalcy to the area.

The Gor-Gor Commandos and the 14 October Brigade have played a central role in recent counterterrorism operations across southern Somalia. Their deployment reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to reclaim territory, protect civilians, and disrupt Al-Shabaab’s financial and logistical networks.

The successful takeover of Jilib Marka marks another incremental gain for Somali security forces in their campaign against Al-Shabaab. While the situation remains fragile, authorities say continued military pressure, combined with intelligence-driven operations and community cooperation, will be key to sustaining long-term stability in Lower Shabelle and beyond.
