PM Hamza urges collective action among Global South Nations
Speaking at the four-day forum, PM Hamza highlighted Somalia’s renewed stability, strengthened institutions, and growing international credibility. He stressed that the country is no longer seeking aid, but ready to contribute ideas and collaborate on global solutions.
Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has urged for increased regional cooperation among nations of the Global South as he says such is critical in ensuring mutual stability and sustainable development.
The PM made the remarks on Friday during the closing session of the MEDays International Forum in Tangier, Morocco, with Somalia taking a leading role in this year’s edition of the event.
In his address, Prime Minister Hamza told the gathering that Somalia had entered a new era of revitalized confidence and stability noting that the country was “writing a new page in its history” after years of open war and re-construction of institutions.
According to the PM, Somalia has regained its international credibility by being perceived as a state with enhanced security, reliable political institutions and reforms that are currently yielding positive outcomes.
The PM stressed that Somalia no longer approaches the world seeking assistance, but it is “ready to engage as a partner based on collaboration, common priorities and joint progress”. He told the delegates that, ”we did not come here to look for charity”. ”We did not come here empty handed but with a preparedness to share ideas, cooperate and help come up with solutions to arising problems.”
Prime Minister Hamza outlined that Africa must also transform itself from being a mere follower of global developments to being a global player in formulating global policies. He called on the African states to take “a united proactive approach that reflects the aspirations and the growing stature of the continent”.
The four day MEDays Forum was held bringing together leaders, policymakers, and global experts on political, economic, and security issues shaping the worlds. Somalia’s delegation at various high level engagements this year has further enhanced regional relationships and created new partnerships for regional cooperation.
The forum ended with several commitments, which included expanding partnerships, enhancing diplomatic dialogue, and supporting Somalia’s long term national goals, which include stability, economic recovery, and increased participation in global affairs. The PM’s presence at MEDays showed that Somalia was becoming more “visible in international arenas” and demonstrated “the country’s willingness and preparedness to engage in regional and international initiatives led by Global South states”.
