Somalia Pledges Support for Sudan’s Peace and Stability
Somalia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, today held a meeting with Sudan’s Ambassador to Somalia, Abdrahman Khalil Ahmed Abakr Afandi.
The discussions in the capital Mogadishu centred on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing cooperation between the two neighboring countries, and addressing pressing humanitarian and security issues in Sudan.
During the meeting, the officials exchanged detailed assessments on the current situation in Sudan, with particular focus on the escalating violence and unrest in the city of El Fasher.
The State Minister highlighted concerns over the severe restrictions on humanitarian assistance, which have limited the delivery of essential aid to affected populations.
Both officials expressed the urgent need to ensure that humanitarian organizations can operate freely and that aid reaches those most in need without obstruction.
The discussion also covered human rights issues, with the State Minister emphasizing Somalia’s commitment to supporting the protection of civilians and the promotion of basic human rights across Sudan. Ambassador Abakr Afandi provided updates on the political and security situation in his country, and both sides explored ways to enhance cooperation in monitoring and responding to crises, including sharing information and coordinating on humanitarian operations.
State Minister Ali Mohamed Omar reaffirmed Somalia’s unwavering support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He underlined the importance of a peaceful political solution to the ongoing conflicts, stressing that achieving long-term stability in Sudan is essential not only for the country itself but for regional peace and security in the Horn of Africa and East Africa as a whole.
Both officials also discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as diplomatic engagement, regional security collaboration, and joint efforts to address humanitarian challenges. The State Minister emphasized Somalia’s readiness to work closely with Sudan to ensure that aid operations are expanded and that vulnerable communities receive timely support, including food, medical assistance, and shelter.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain close communication and coordination, particularly on matters relating to humanitarian relief, security, and political developments. State Minister Ali Mohamed Omar assured that Somalia remains committed to deepening its historic ties with Sudan and will continue to play an active role in supporting efforts aimed at achieving peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
