Somali Environment Minister holds high-level talks with German Foreign Office Secretary on Climate Resilience and Security
Berlin, Germany - The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, Major General Bashiir Mohamed Jama, held a high-level bilateral meeting with Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr, Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, on the sidelines of the Berlin Climate and Security Conference 2025 (#BCSC2025).
The meeting served as an important platform to deepen cooperation between Somalia and Germany on critical issues related to climate change, environmental resilience, and sustainable development.
Discussions centred on strengthening joint efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, support climate adaptation projects, and enhance the capacity of Somali communities to withstand climate-induced shocks such as droughts, floods, and desertification.
Minister Bashiir highlighted Somalia’s national priorities on climate adaptation and environmental management, noting that the country continues to face severe climate-related challenges that directly affect food security, livelihoods, and stability.
He underscored the Somali government’s commitment to implementing climate-resilient policies and promoting renewable energy and sustainable resource management as key pillars of long-term national development.
Dr. von Geyr commended Somalia’s efforts to integrate climate change considerations into its national policies and expressed Germany’s readiness to continue supporting Somalia through capacity-building initiatives, technical cooperation, and green investment programs.
He reaffirmed Germany’s long-standing partnership with Somalia in promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development.
Both parties agreed to expand collaboration between the Somali Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and relevant German institutions, with a focus on research exchange, early warning systems, and community-based environmental protection projects.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of Somalia and Germany to addressing the intersection between climate and security and to working together toward a more resilient and sustainable future for the Somali people and the wider Horn of Africa region.
