Somalia Launches Training for Journalists to Combat Misinformation and Fake News
Mogadishu-The Acting Director General of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdinasser Hussein Hassan, who also serves as the Director of Administration and Finance, officially opened a training workshop in Mogadishu focused on countering misinformation and fake news.
The training, jointly organized by the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and the Government of Australia, brings together 32 journalists from various media outlets across Mogadishu and different regions of the country.
It aims to enhance the professional capacity of Somali journalists in identifying, verifying, and preventing the spread of false and misleading information, particularly on digital and social media platforms.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Abdinasser emphasized the critical role journalists play in safeguarding truth, public trust, and national stability.
He urged participants to uphold the highest standards of accuracy and integrity in their reporting, underscoring that responsible journalism is essential to protecting Somalia’s democratic values.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary-General of NUSOJ, Mr. Omar Faruk Osman, highlighted the importance of the training in defending truth and promoting transparency within the Somali media landscape. He warned that fake news and disinformation pose serious threats to public confidence, peace, and social cohesion in the country.
Australia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jenny Da Rin, who participated virtually in the opening session, expressed her government’s continued commitment to supporting Somali journalists.
She noted that Australia values its partnership with Somalia in promoting a free, credible, and professional media sector that contributes to peace and development.
The week-long program will feature practical sessions on fact-checking, digital literacy, and ethical reporting.
Participants will also explore strategies for countering online propaganda and building resilience against disinformation campaigns targeting Somali audiences.
In a statement, the Ministry of Information commended NUSOJ and the Government of Australia for their collaboration in empowering Somali media professionals, reaffirming its dedication to strengthening a free and responsible press that serves the interests of the Somali people.
