Gorgor Commandos and NISA disrupt Al-Shabaab plans, seizing strategic territories in Lower Shabelle
Somali security forces intensify operations to protect civilians and maintain stability along key coastal routes.
Somali Federal Government forces, comprising elite Gorgor Commandos and units from the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), have carried out a coordinated operation targeting Al-Shabaab positions in strategic areas of Lower Shabelle, including Gandarshe and Dhanaane. These areas serve as crucial routes connecting the capital, Mogadishu, to Marka, the regional hub along the coast.
According to military officials overseeing the operation, the mission was planned to disrupt the movement and activities of Al-Shabaab militants who had been orchestrating security threats and planning attacks against local communities. The operation resulted in the seizure of key territories and important infrastructure, including vehicles and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) intended for use against civilians.
During the clashes, one Al-Shabaab militant was reportedly neutralized, while another was captured alive. No casualties among the Somali forces have been reported. Officials emphasized that the operation demonstrated the growing capability and coordination of Somali security forces in tackling extremist threats across the region.
Brigadier General Saahid Jaamac Faarax Jareere, Commander of the First Division of the Gorgor Commandos, addressed the troops following the operation, urging them to maintain momentum and intensify their efforts against remaining insurgent elements. He stressed the importance of controlling strategic locations to ensure the safety of communities and to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s operational network.
“This joint operation highlights the dedication of Somali forces to protect our citizens and secure our regions from terrorist threats. Our objective is clear: to deny Al-Shabaab safe havens and to maintain stability along the coast and key transit points,” Brig. Gen. Jareere said.
The successful operation marks a significant step in Somalia’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts, reinforcing government control over vital areas and demonstrating the effectiveness of joint operations between the military and intelligence agencies. Security officials have pledged to continue similar operations to secure the region and protect civilians from extremist attacks.
Residents in Gandarshe and Dhanaane welcomed the operation, expressing relief at the increased security presence and the government’s commitment to restoring peace in areas long affected by militant activity.
