AU Commander Hails Key Security Gains in Lower Shabelle Operations
Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, commander of AUSSOM, confirmed that Somali forces and AU troops have successfully reclaimed Bariire, Sabiid, and Anoole from Al-Shabaab, marking tangible progress in ongoing operations. The reopening of the Sabiid and Caanoole bridges, destroyed in June attacks, underscores efforts to restore security, trade, and civilian movement in the region.
Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, Commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has reported significant progress in security operations in Lower Shabelle, with Al-Shabaab militants cleared from strategic towns including Bariire, Sabiid, and Anoole.
Lt. Gen. Kavuma made the remarks during the official reopening of the Sabiid and Caanoole bridges, which were destroyed by Al-Shabaab in June. He thanked the United States and allied partners, including Turkey, for supporting the operation’s first phase, which has been successfully completed.
“The bravery of Somali security forces and AUSSOM troops during the recapture of Bariire and nearby areas has been remarkable. We are committed to completing operations to remove Al-Shabaab entirely from Somalia,” Lt. Gen. Kavuma said.
The reopening of these bridges marks an important milestone in restoring the movement of people and trade in Lower Shabelle, boosting both security and local economic activity. The AU commander emphasized that ongoing infrastructure development and coordinated security efforts are essential for stabilizing communities and preventing a resurgence of militant activity.
“These efforts are not only about clearing territory but also about enabling the Somali people to live in safety, access markets, and rebuild their livelihoods,” he added.
The operation highlights the continued partnership between Somali security forces, AUSSOM, and international allies, demonstrating progress toward regional stability and the long-term goal of eliminating extremist threats in southern Somalia.
