In Summary

Clan clashes erupt in Salal and Awdal over land disputes linked to the Heer Isse ceremony.

A clan conflict between two communities residing in the Salal and Awdal regions of Somaliland has escalated over the past two days. The dispute reportedly stems from a disagreement over land ownership between the two clans.

Speaking to the media, Waddani Party Chairman, Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan, urged the communities to cease fighting. While reports indicate casualties and injuries, the exact number of people affected remains unknown.

“The ongoing clashes in Saylac and its surroundings over the past two days are deeply regrettable. It is tragic that civilians are killing each other. We mourn the loss of life and regret that two brotherly clans are in conflict,” Hirsi said.

Chairman Hirsi called on the warring clans to exercise restraint and stop hostilities. He also urged the government and security forces to intervene and mediate between the communities.

The conflict erupted recently after one of the clans sought to hold the Xeer Ciise ceremony in Saylac, a move opposed by the other clan, which claimed that the land designated for the ceremony belonged to them.

Earlier this month, the Somaliland government initially approved the ceremony in Saylac, sparking protests in Boorama that left 19 people dead. Following public unrest, the government reversed its decision. Subsequently, the clan intending to hold the ceremony declared conflict, and the opposing clan responded in kind, leading to the current fighting.

Elders from across western Somaliland, security officials, and government representatives are currently on the ground working to mediate and de-escalate the conflict.
