Mediation Talks In Somali Political Crisis Collapse As Impeachment Deadline Lapses

A seven man committee established to mediate the current political crisis that has split the Somalia Federal Parliament has announced talks have collapsed.

The Upper House Mediation Committee Chairman Abdi Hashi Abdullahi issued a statement some minutes to midnight on Wednesday as a deadline to have an impeachment motion against Speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari lapsed.

The committee was mandated to diffuse the rift and arbitrate between rival Mps within the Lower House of the Federal Parliament.

Mps from the Jawari camp held a meeting at the Villa Hargeisa the Speaker’s residence where they issued a statement where they said the motion had been nullified after the time lapse ended on the 26 March and expected Jawari to resume normal duties from Thursday.

The crisis was triggered when Mps allied to Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire plotted to have Speaker of the Lower House Mohamed Osman Jawari ousted.

The Pro Khaire Mps accuse Jawari of being an impediment in the Parliament procedures.

Jawari has been the Speaker since 2012.
