National Climate Change Fund launches a three-day training in Mogadishu to strengthen access to climate finance and Green Climate Fund procedures.

The National Climate Change Fund has officially launched a three-day training workshop in Mogadishu, bringing together officials from government institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, and key stakeholders involved in climate change financing.

The training aims to strengthen Somalia’s national capacity to access international climate finance, with a particular focus on understanding the procedures of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and developing effective, high-impact climate projects. Participants are being equipped with practical knowledge and technical skills necessary to design, manage, and implement projects that address the growing impacts of climate change in the country.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, officials highlighted the importance of the training in preparing Somalia to fully benefit from global climate financing opportunities. They emphasized that improved coordination and shared understanding among government institutions, civil society, and the private sector are essential for mobilizing climate resources and ensuring their effective use.

The workshop also focuses on building both technical and institutional capacity, enabling Somalia to better access, manage, and account for international climate funds related to climate adaptation and mitigation. Sessions include discussions on project formulation, funding requirements, compliance standards, and long-term sustainability.

Participants noted that the initiative will contribute to enhancing national readiness and strengthening partnerships among key stakeholders working on climate resilience and environmental protection. The training is expected to support the development of climate projects that respond to Somalia’s vulnerability to droughts, floods, and other climate-related challenges.

The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its strong commitment to building resilient national institutions and fostering broad-based cooperation to address climate change. Officials stressed that such efforts are vital for supporting sustainable economic development and safeguarding the livelihoods of the Somali people in the face of increasing climate risks.
