Somalia’s lower house approves two key bills to boost resource management and Climate Preparedness

Members of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia today convened and formally approved two significant legislative bills.

The approval followed extensive debate, culminating in a vote at the parliamentary chamber, where 141 MPs supported the bills, 2 opposed, and 2 abstained.

The first bill ratified is the Somalia Mining Bill, which provides a framework for the exploration, extraction, management, and utilization of the country’s mineral resources. The legislation aims to ensure sustainable and regulated use of Somalia’s valuable mineral wealth.

The second approved bill establishes the National Meteorological Agency, a government body responsible for weather forecasting, issuing early warnings for natural disasters, and supporting the country’s development planning and climate resilience efforts.

The Speaker of the House of the People emphasized that passing these bills is a crucial step toward strengthening governance, better managing natural resources, and preparing for the impacts of climate change.

Both bills will now be forwarded to the Upper House for consideration, as part of Somalia’s constitutional legislative process.
