The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has officially handed over a consignment of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to the Federal Government of Somalia, aimed at strengthening the operational capacity, efficiency, and transparency of key government ministries.
The handover ceremony, held in Mogadishu, was attended by the Ministers of Defence, Justice, and Security, along with senior officials from the European Union (EU) and the United Nations. The equipment, which includes advanced digital systems and tools, is designed to support the ongoing modernization efforts within government institutions and enhance their ability to deliver public services effectively.
Speaking during the event, the Minister of Defence, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, commended the UN and EU for their continued support to Somalia’s state-building and governance reform programs. He noted that the new ICT tools will play a crucial role in improving the Ministry’s administrative systems, communication infrastructure, and overall performance.
“This support comes at a vital time as we continue to strengthen the institutional framework of the Ministry of Defence,” Minister Fiqi said. “The modern ICT systems will not only enhance transparency and accountability but also help us manage data, logistics, and personnel more efficiently.”
He added that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to digitize public administration and improve service delivery across all sectors.
The ceremony was also graced by European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, the UNOPS Country Director, and other senior representatives from the EU and the UN. Ambassador Di Mauro reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s governance and institutional reforms, emphasizing that technological advancement is key to building strong, accountable state institutions.
UNOPS officials highlighted that the project is part of a wider collaboration with the Somali government and international partners to strengthen institutional resilience, promote transparency, and ensure effective use of public resources. The organization pledged to continue providing technical and logistical assistance to help Somalia modernize its administrative systems.
The Ministries of Defence, Justice, and Security are among the core institutions targeted under Somalia’s institutional capacity-building initiatives, which seek to improve coordination, enhance security sector reform, and promote rule of law.
The handover of the ICT equipment marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s digital transformation journey, reflecting the government’s growing focus on efficiency, technology-driven governance, and international cooperation for sustainable development.
