Explosion in Lower Shabelle region leaves several dead and injured
Reports have emerged of a deadly explosion that occurred in parts of Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, causing multiple casualties among civilians.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, at least three people were killed and two others sustained injuries after an explosive device went off in Afgooye town, located in the Lower Shabelle region. The blast, which took place in a busy area, caused panic among residents as emergency responders and local authorities rushed to the scene.
Witnesses told local media that the explosion appeared to have targeted an area frequented by civilians. However, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, which is believed to have involved an improvised explosive device (IED).
Security officials in the region have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but investigations are reportedly underway to determine the nature of the explosion and those behind it.
The Lower Shabelle region has been one of the most volatile areas in southern Somalia, frequently witnessing attacks and roadside bombings carried out by the militant group Al-Shabaab. The group often targets Somali government forces, African Union peacekeepers, and occasionally civilians in its ongoing insurgency against the federal government.
Local residents have expressed growing concern over the recurring insecurity in the region, urging authorities to strengthen security patrols and enhance intelligence operations to prevent similar attacks in the future.
The explosion adds to the series of recent violent incidents in southern Somalia, highlighting the persistent threat of terrorism despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations by the Somali National Army and allied forces.
