Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has conferred a National Honour Medal upon the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, in recognition of his long-standing support and unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Somalia.
The award ceremony took place in Djibouti City, where President Hassan praised his counterpart for his exceptional leadership and commitment to strengthening the historical ties between the two nations.
“This medal is a symbol of brotherhood, cooperation, and mutual respect between our two peoples,” President Hassan said. “Somalis will always remember Djibouti’s instrumental role in restoring peace and governance through the historic Carta Peace Conference.”
The Carta Peace Conference, held in 2000 under President Guelleh’s leadership, was a landmark event that laid the foundation for Somalia’s return to statehood after nearly a decade of civil conflict. The conference produced the Transitional National Government (TNG), the first recognized Somali administration since 1991.
President Hassan emphasized that Djibouti has remained a steadfast ally, contributing to Somalia’s political stability, peacebuilding, and regional cooperation.
“President Guelleh’s continued friendship and support reflect the true spirit of African solidarity,” he added, noting that the partnership between Mogadishu and Djibouti continues to grow across sectors including security, education, and trade.
The event was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives from both countries, who lauded the two leaders for reinforcing regional unity and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
