President Hassan Sheikh arrives in Djibouti for 25th anniversary of Somalia’s peace conference
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday arrived in Djibouti to a warm reception as he joins regional leaders for celebrations marking 25 years since the re-establishment of Somalia’s Third Republic.
The Somali leader was received by senior government officials at Djibouti International Airport before proceeding to the capital for the official commemoration ceremony.
The event, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the landmark 2000 Djibouti Peace Conference, highlights Djibouti’s crucial role in helping Somalia rebuild its state institutions after years of civil war.
During the ceremony, President Guelleh hosted President Hassan Sheikh and other guests at the unveiling of the Horn of Africa Reconciliation Center, also known as the “Carta Peace Monument,” a symbolic site honoring the peace and unity efforts that began in Djibouti a quarter-century ago.
President Hassan Sheikh is expected to address the gathering, reflecting on Somalia’s progress since the Carta Conference and the lessons learned in reconciliation and governance.
The visit underscores the close ties between Mogadishu and Djibouti and the continued partnership between the two nations in promoting regional stability, peace, and cooperation.
