The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), in collaboration with Africa Risk Capacity (ARC), has convened a pivotal Drought Risk Reduction conference in Nairobi.
The event, which brings together government officials, humanitarian organizations, and key stakeholders, focuses on developing sustainable strategies to address the ongoing drought challenges in Somalia.
The conference opened with an urgent briefing on the deteriorating drought situation in Somalia, emphasizing the critical need for collective action to mitigate the impact of recurring droughts that have severely affected the country’s agricultural sector and livelihoods.
During today’s meeting, Somali Members of Parliament from the Finance, Interior Affairs, and Agriculture Committees united in their commitment to finding solutions and prioritizing drought resilience.
The leadership team from SoDMA, along with partners including Africa Risk Capacity (ARC), Start Network, and the World Food Programme (WFP), presented an in-depth overview of Somalia’s drought insurance system.
This system aims to provide rapid financial assistance in the event of droughts, allowing for a more timely and effective response to the crisis.
The briefing also underscored the importance of building partnerships and strengthening the country’s capacity to manage and reduce the risks associated with drought.
With continued support from international partners and a shared commitment from the Somali government, this conference marks a significant step forward in addressing the long-standing drought challenges in Somalia.
