At least 23 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed and a dozen others injured following a well-coordinated operation at the Danowe location near Shalanbod district in the lower Shabelle region by the Somali National Arm.
According to the state media SONNA, the Somali National Army Chief, Odowa Yusuf Rage said ATMIS forces alongside the Somali military thwarted an ambush attack from the Alshabab group and inflicted casualties.
“Our SNA forces killed 23 terrorist militants of Al-Shabaab and injured others at Danow location in the lower Shabelle region this morning. The forces recovered large weapons during the operationâ€, Army Chief told the state media.
He added that the operations will continue until the militants weed out of the region and country.
The Somali forces backed by pro-government militia have liberated villages and killed hundreds of al-Shabab fighters in the past months in operations across Somalia.
The militant group has lost ground to the Somali government and African Union troops in recent months but still controls some territory in southern and central Somalia.
