Somali National Army backed by African Union troops have launched new military offensive against armed group Al Shabaab.
The operation dubbed ‘Operation Jubba Corridor’ is ongoing in Bay and Gedo regions in the south of the country is aimed at pushing  out Al Shabaab from the remaining areas under their control according to AMISOM.
African Union Mission in Somalia said in a statement that the operation being undertaken by joint AU and Somali National Army (SNA) troops follows recent successful operations that have seen the Al Shabaab pushed out of key regions of the country.
Fierce clashes have been reported in Qansax Dheere and Fafadun on Friday.
AMISOM Deputy Force Commander Operations and Plans Major General Mohammedesha Zeyinu said the aim of the operation is to clear Al Shabaab fighters from the area still under their control.
“This operation seeks to clear Main Supply Routes to facilitate delivery of humanitarian aid to the population and flash Al Shabaab ensuring full control by the Federal Government of Somalia,†he said.
Maj. Gen. Mohammedesha emphasized AMISOM’s commitment in offering support to the Somali National Army.
