Somalia and Morocco forge strategic partnership for 2026–2028
Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalan Hadliye and Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita signed a wide-ranging cooperation roadmap in Rabat, expanding bilateral ties across agriculture, renewable energy, education, security, and cultural exchange, while also agreeing to waive visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders.
Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalan Ali Abdi, met in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, to discuss strengthening the fraternal relations between the two countries and deepening their strategic partnership.
During the meeting, the two ministers signed a 2026-2028 Cooperation Roadmap, which outlines expanded collaboration across key sectors including agriculture, water and irrigation, marine fisheries, tourism, renewable energy, education, vocational training, higher education, health, security, economic investment, climate change, sports, and culture.
The agreement also increases the number of annual academic scholarships offered to Somali students to 120, covering various levels of university education.
Additionally, both ministers signed a bilateral agreement waiving visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports from both countries, facilitating official travel and strengthening government-to-government engagement.
The two sides emphasized the importance of political coordination and consultations at regional and international levels, noting that such cooperation will help align positions on shared issues while upholding the principles of peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Both ministers reaffirmed their support for the independence and national sovereignty of their respective countries and praised UN Security Council Resolution 2797.
