Somalia Wins Seat on African Union Peace and Security Council for 2026–2028

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has congratulated the Somali people and national institutions following the country’s historic election to the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council for the 2026–2028 term.

In a statement marking the milestone, President Hassan Sheikh described the victory as a significant diplomatic achievement that reflects Somalia’s growing leadership role at both continental and international levels. He noted that the election demonstrates renewed confidence among African Union member states in Somalia’s progress, stability, and constructive engagement in regional and global affairs.

“This trust and support from African Union member states is clear evidence of the positive transformation underway in our country and the strengthening partnerships we have built across the continent,” the President said. “Having previously served on the United Nations Security Council, Somalia now takes its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council.”

The President commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for its dedicated efforts in securing the seat, highlighting the strategic diplomacy and sustained engagement that led to the successful outcome. He emphasized that the achievement represents not only a victory for the government but also for the Somali people, whose resilience and determination have contributed to the country’s reemergence on the continental stage.

Somalia’s membership on the AU Peace and Security Council comes at a critical time for Africa, as the continent continues to address complex security challenges, including terrorism, political instability, and humanitarian crises. The Council plays a central role in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, mediation, and the promotion of stability across Africa.

President Hassan Sheikh expressed gratitude to all member states that supported and voted for Somalia, stating that the win reflects solidarity, friendship, and a shared vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa.

He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to actively contribute to the Council’s mandate by promoting dialogue, supporting peacebuilding initiatives, strengthening regional cooperation, and advancing collective security efforts across the continent.
