Bosaso Port operations halted following new directives issued by DP World.

Operations at Bosaso Port came to a complete standstill on Thursday morning after DP World issued an emergency directive affecting all port workers, bringing all activities at the port to a halt for the day.

According to multiple sources contacted by local media, DP World ordered all port workers to purchase a new mandatory work uniform that will be required going forward. The cost of the uniform is reported to be nearly USD 100, a price many workers say is unaffordable. Port laborers have also raised concerns that parts of the required attire, such as safety helmets, are impractical for dock workers who traditionally carry cargo on their heads.

In addition to the uniform requirement, DP World introduced another new policy regarding work identification cards. Previously, port workers were issued work cards that were renewed every six months. Under the new directive, the validity period has been extended to one year, but at a cost of USD 14. Workers have long opposed fees related to work cards, and similar measures in the past sparked protests among port laborers.

Tensions were further heightened by reports that 14 port employees have been officially notified that their contracts will be terminated starting at the beginning of the new year, 2026. The dismissals have added to growing concerns among workers about job security and working conditions at the port.

The suspension of operations at Bosaso Port has raised fears of economic disruption, as the port serves as a critical gateway for trade and supplies in Puntland and across northeastern Somalia. As of now, there has been no official statement from DP World addressing the workers’ grievances or clarifying when port operations will resume.
