Somalia signs €102 Million EU agreement to boost development and budget support

Officials from the Federal Government of Somalia have signed a €102 million agreement with senior representatives from the European Union (EU), including the EU Delegation to Somalia and the EU External Action Service.

The agreement provides budget support aimed at helping the Somali government implement development projects and maintain financial stability.

Finance Minister Biixi Iimaan Cige and Planning Minister Cabdiraxmaan Beene Beene represented Somalia in the deal. Minister Beene Beene said part of the funding will be used to improve education and support development in areas recently liberated from Al-Shabaab control.

“The funds will be divided into four key areas, including improving the quality of education and ensuring more children can attend school. Thirty million euros will go to federal and regional governments to develop areas freed from extremist control,” he said.

Finance Minister Biixi Iimaan Cige thanked the EU for its continued support, highlighting the role of budget support in promoting economic growth and development projects across Somalia.

Both sides stressed the importance of using the funds transparently and aligning them with Somalia’s national development plans to achieve sustainable results that directly benefit the Somali people.
