One Somaliland coastguard was killed and two others were wounded after
a gun battle with Djiboutian naval petrol boats on Monday off the
Indian Ocean, officials said.
The clashes started after Djibouti naval patrol boat intercepted four
illegal foreign fishing boats along its coastline.
The boat shaped tiny horn of African navy has captured one of the
fishing boats along with number of Somaliland coast guards on board.
Another reinforcement Somaliland gunship boat fired into Djibouti navy
patrol ship in order to rescue colleagues but did not succeed.
Sources in Hargeisa have told the media that foreign fishing vessels
have been permitted by the authorities to carry on their fishing
activity along Somaliland waters.
No official comment from both Hargeisa and Djibouti over this latest
confrontation.
Somaliland declared its breakaway from Somalia in early 1990s though not recognized internationally.
