Somalia approves maritime vessel registration regulator to strengthen governance and safety

The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia,Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, has expressed his gratitude to the Council of Ministers for approving the establishment of the Maritime Vessel Registration Regulator, a significant reform aimed at addressing longstanding challenges in the country’s maritime sector.

The new regulator will create a unified legal framework for registering vessels under the Somali flag, enhancing safety, oversight, and the protection of the flag’s reputation. It will also ensure compliance with international maritime agreements, strengthening Somalia’s alignment with global standards.

Minister Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur highlighted that this initiative exemplifies the Federal Government’s commitment to solving national challenges through institutional reform and effective governance. He emphasized that the regulator will play a key role in modernizing Somalia’s maritime sector, promoting accountability, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
