Somali National Army and Local Forces Intensify Operations in Hiiraan Region
The Somali National Army (SNA), in coordination with local defense forces known as Macawiisleyda, has intensified recent military movements in Matabaan district of the Hiiraan region.
Government forces and allied community fighters are preparing to relaunch operations aimed at retaking areas and districts in eastern Hiiraan that are currently under the control of Al-Shabaab.
Two days ago, the Commander of the Ground Forces addressed hundreds of soldiers in Matabaan who have been mobilized by the government for the planned offensive to liberate areas held by the militant group in Hiiraan.
The coordinated troop movements have already been strongly felt in towns under Al-Shabaab control, particularly Mahaas and Moqokori, which the group captured late last year.
Reports also indicate that Al-Shabaab has deployed additional fighters to Maxaas, a strategically important town that links the Hiiraan and Galguduud regions.
Meanwhile, since the start of these military preparations, Al-Shabaab has withdrawn from several areas, including Waabweyn and Teedaan, located between the towns of Matabaan and Maxaas in the Hiiraan region.
