Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Pay Official Visit to Mogadishu as Part of Africa Tour

China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, is set to arrive in Mogadishu on an official visit, where he is expected to hold high-level meetings with senior leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues.

The visit to Somalia is part of a broader African tour that began today, January 7, and will run through January 12. Wang Yi’s itinerary includes visits to Somalia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho, with a strong focus on strengthening cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the countries he is visiting.

According to official statements, the Chinese Foreign Minister’s discussions will center on enhancing diplomatic, political, and economic cooperation, as well as reinforcing strategic partnerships between China and African nations amid growing international competition on the continent.

China has maintained a long-standing diplomatic tradition of prioritizing Africa, with Chinese foreign ministers making official visits to African countries for the past 36 consecutive years. This practice underscores Beijing’s recognition of Africa’s strategic importance and its commitment to fostering long-term partnerships across the continent.

During his visit, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, is expected to participate in a ceremony marking the launch of strengthened China–Africa relations at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

China remains among the leading international partners that have consistently expressed support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The Beijing government has repeatedly condemned foreign interference in Somalia’s internal affairs and reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s stability and statehood.

The visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic activity in the Horn of Africa, as global powers seek to expand their influence and partnerships across the region. Observers view Wang Yi’s visit as a signal of China’s continued engagement in Somalia and its broader strategic interest in Africa’s political and economic future.
