Preparations for the Banaadir district elections are progressing smoothly
The Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (GMDQS), Abdikariim Ahmed Hassan, has reaffirmed that the Commission is fully implementing its constitutional mandate and the national electoral laws, noting that preparations for the upcoming district council elections in the Banaadir region are progressing smoothly and in accordance with the official electoral timetable.
Chairperson Cabdikariim announced that 12 political associations have fully submitted their lists of candidates, while several others have partially submitted their lists and are finalizing the remaining requirements.
The political associations that have submitted complete candidate lists are:
1. Ramaas
2. Karaama
3. Towfiiq
4. Saab
5. Madalsan
6. Justice & Unity
7. Progress & National Unity
8. Somali Citizens
9. People’s Unity
10. Democratic Nation
11. National Value
12. Good Governance of Somalia
The Chairperson stated that the timely submission of candidate lists demonstrates strong preparedness among participating political associations. He urged those that have not yet completed the process to take advantage of the remaining legal window to finalize their submissions.
Finally, Abdikariim Ahmed Hassan called on all electoral stakeholders—including political associations, civil society, women, youth, and district administrations—to work closely with the Commission to ensure a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful election in full compliance with the law.
Meanwhile, the Commission’s Spokesperson, Jama Abdi Ahmed, noted that any criticism directed at the Commission despite its strict adherence to constitutional duties likely stems from misunderstanding or incomplete information. He emphasized that the GMDQS operates independently and with full transparency in all its electoral responsibilities.
