The Minister of Interior Federal Affairs and Reconciliation of Somalia Ahmed Moallim Fiqi received a delegation led by the UNDP Somalia Resident Representative Lionel Laurens for a discussion on Somalia’s Joint Programme on Local Governance (JPLG) and stabilization efforts.
Minister Fiqi underscored that the Somali Federal Government has liberated and stabilized very many areas which were under the hands of Al-Shabab for decades.
He stated that the government is committed to supporting the Somali people living in those stabilized areas and ensure services reach them.
“JPLG has been in Somalia for the last fifteen years, but a lot has changed in that time. Many Somalis are experiencing liberation for the first time in those fifteen years, there is a whole new context in Somalia, and the programme should adjust to it.”
The UNDP Somalia Resident Representative Lionel Laurens stated that his office is committed to working on the government’s priorities and taking a holistic approach to supporting local governance in the current context.
He commended the Somali government for its ongoing efforts to stabilizing the country and reiterated the unwavering commitment by the UNDP to continue supporting areas which were recently liberated from Al-Shabab.
