KISMAYO – Ahmed Madobe, President of Jubbaland, welcomed Colonel David Haskell, Commander of U.S. Special Operations in East Africa, to Kismayo to deliberate on the ongoing security initiatives and the United States’ support in combating al-Shabaab.
The discussion focused on the recent operations executed by Jubbaland forces and the vital security assistance provided by the United States. President Madobe underscored the successful liberation of new areas and emphasized the crucial need for continued U.S. support to eradicate al-Shabaab.
“We discussed the latest renewed and successful efforts by the armed forces in Jubbaland to liberate new areas and urged the United States government to assist the Somali people in eliminating the Khawarij,” President Madobe said in an X post on his account.
Colonel Haskell praised the successful operations in the Bulohaji area and its surroundings, highlighting the dedication of Jubbaland forces in reclaiming territories still under al-Shabaab control. The meeting also saw the participation of Jubbaland Intelligence Chief Mohamed Ahmed Sabriye and Dervish Forces Commander General Ismail Sahardid.
The United States has consistently supported Somalia, particularly in enhancing security. Since reestablishing formal cooperation in 2012, the relationship has been cautiously managed, following the setbacks of the 1990s’ mission.
In 2022, the U.S. redeployed troops to Somalia, reversing the 2020 decision made by former President Donald Trump to withdraw approximately 700 troops. This redeployment, requested by the Pentagon, aimed to strengthen the efforts against al-Shabaab, coinciding with the re-election of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, 15th of May 2022.
