Senate committee inspects SoDMA operations amid nationwide drought
The Senate Committee on Social Services visited SoDMA to assess ongoing humanitarian efforts amid the severe drought. The visit focused on disaster management, the impact on vulnerable communities, and ways to strengthen the agency’s operations.
The Senate Committee on Social Services, Humanitarian Affairs, Media, and Culture conducted a field visit to the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to evaluate the agency’s operations and the humanitarian situation across Somalia.The delegation was welcomed by SoDMA Chairman, Mohamud Maalin Abdulle, who provided a comprehensive briefing on the agency’s responsibilities, ongoing operations, challenges, and the current humanitarian crisis caused by severe drought affecting both people and livestock.
During the visit, the committee closely examined the impact of the drought on vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. SoDMA officials also outlined ongoing relief and disaster management efforts.
Committee Chair, Senator Osmaan Mohamud Mohamed (Dufle), commended SoDMA leadership for their work and emphasized the committee’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at addressing the highlighted challenges and strengthening the agency’s capacity.The committee stated that this oversight visit is part of the Senate’s efforts to enhance social service institutions and monitor humanitarian conditions in the country.
