Somali National Army Repels Heavy Al-Shabaab Attack on Military Base in Middle Shabelle

A heavy attack launched by Al-Shabaab militants on a Somali government military base in the Middle Shabelle region of southern Somalia has been successfully repelled by the Somali National Army (SNA), according to military officials.

The attack targeted an SNA position in the Jabad Godane area of Middle Shabelle, where militants attempted to overrun the base in a coordinated assault. However, government forces responded swiftly, engaging the attackers and forcing them to retreat after sustaining significant losses.

Security sources confirmed that Somali forces are now fully in control of the area following what was described as a major setback for Al-Shabaab. The militants were reportedly pushed back after intense fighting, leaving behind casualties.

In the aftermath of the clash, Somali troops launched a large-scale operation combining clearance and stabilization efforts aimed at rooting out any remaining Al-Shabaab elements hiding in the area. The operation is intended to prevent the group from regrouping or carrying out further attacks that could disrupt peace and security for local residents.

The Somali National Army reaffirmed its determination to continue operations against Al-Shabaab in order to maintain security and protect civilians across the country. Military officials emphasized that sustained pressure on the group remains a top priority as part of broader counterterrorism efforts.

Speaking from the scene of the fighting, Second Lieutenant Rabiic confirmed that government forces had suffered casualties during the confrontation. “Some of our soldiers were martyred, but we successfully defended ourselves against the Al-Shabaab fighters who attacked us,” he said.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Middle Shabelle, a region that has frequently witnessed clashes between government forces and Al-Shabaab militants. Despite these challenges, Somali authorities say recent operations demonstrate the growing capability of the national army to defend key positions and counter militant threats.
