Somalia and Brazil Strengthen Cooperation on Social Development and Poverty Reduction

The Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development of the Federal Government of Somalia,  Mohamud Abdirahman Sheikh Farah (Beenebeene), held a meeting with Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger,  Wellington Dias, on the sidelines of the 2nd Global Social Development Forum taking place in Doha.

The discussion focused on accelerating joint efforts to reduce poverty, enhance social protection systems, and expand opportunities for women, youth, and displaced communities.

Both ministers emphasized the need for inclusive policies that align with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029), which prioritizes equitable growth and social resilience.

Minister Beenebeene commended Brazil’s success in implementing community-centered development programs and highlighted Somalia’s commitment to learning from global best practices to strengthen its own social welfare initiatives.

He underscored that Somalia’s development strategy aims to empower vulnerable groups while ensuring that economic progress translates into improved livelihoods.

On his part, Minister Wellington Dias reaffirmed Brazil’s readiness to collaborate closely with Somalia through knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and strategic investment in social sectors.

He noted that Brazil’s experience in poverty reduction and inclusive growth could serve as a valuable model for emerging economies like Somalia.

The two sides agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in key areas such as social policy design, private sector engagement, and sustainable investment.

They also discussed the potential for future technical partnerships between Somali and Brazilian institutions to promote innovation in development planning.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to transform policy discussions into measurable outcomes that create jobs, strengthen community resilience, and promote long-term social stability in both nations.
