The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held bilateral talks with the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union held at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.

During the meeting, the AU Commission Chairperson congratulated Somalia on its recent election to the African Union Peace and Security Council, describing the achievement as a reflection of the country’s growing role in advancing peace and security across the continent. He noted that Somalia’s inclusion in the influential body signals increased confidence among African states in Mogadishu’s leadership and commitment to regional stability.

Mr. Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, underscoring the continental body’s principled stance in safeguarding member states against threats to their independence.

The discussions also addressed ongoing efforts to resolve financial challenges affecting the African Union mission in Somalia. The Chairperson emphasized the importance of enhancing the mission’s operational effectiveness, including strengthening its civilian components, to ensure sustainable progress in security and state-building efforts.

He further commended the Federal Government of Somalia for advancing inclusive political dialogue and preparations for the country’s upcoming elections. He described these processes as critical pillars for achieving lasting peace, stability and long-term development.

On his part, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed gratitude to the African Union for its consistent support and principled solidarity with Somalia. He acknowledged the AU’s vital contribution to peacekeeping, stabilization and the reconstruction of state institutions in the country.

The President reiterated Somalia’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the African Union in pursuit of shared continental priorities. He also welcomed continued support in humanitarian assistance and resilience-building initiatives aimed at strengthening communities and addressing the impacts of conflict and climate-related challenges.

The bilateral meeting highlighted the strong partnership between Somalia and the African Union, as both sides pledged to intensify collaboration in promoting peace, democratic governance and sustainable development across the region.
