Somalia’s energy minister visits health and education facilities powered by free electricity in Dhusamareb

On Monday, February 2, 2026, Somalia’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame, visited several facilities in Dhusamareb that are now receiving free electricity under the Somalia Electricity Recovery Project (ILAYS).

The visit, accompanied by the State Minister and Deputy Minister of the Ministry, included the Galmudug Ministry of Energy building, Dhusamareb General Hospital, and a local school.

Galmudug Energy Minister Ahmed Nur Haji welcomed the federal delegation and briefed them on ongoing energy projects in the region.

Hospital officials said the free electricity has significantly improved healthcare services and reduced the costs previously spent on power. “Thanks to ILAYS, we can now focus our budget on other critical services,” they said.

Minister Abdullahi Bidhaan emphasized the importance of maintaining and servicing solar energy systems to ensure sustainable and continuous power supply. He said the ILAYS project prioritizes serving communities efficiently, especially health and education facilities, in line with directives from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

“Our goal is to provide affordable electricity and improve water access to help mitigate the effects of drought in Somalia,” the minister added.
