Somali Parliamentary Leadership Meets Constitutional Review Committees
The Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur (Madobe), accompanied by the First Deputy Speaker of the Upper House, Ali Shacbaan Ibrahim; the First Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Ms. Sadiya Yasin Haji Samatar; the Second Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Abdullahi Omar Abshirow; and the Second Deputy Speaker of the Upper House, Abdullahi Hirsi Timacadde, held a joint meeting with the committees responsible for the constitutional review process.
During the meeting, the constitutional review committees formally presented the leadership of both chambers of parliament with proposed amendments to Chapters Five through Nine of the Provisional Constitution, along with a detailed timetable outlining the scheduling and sequencing of parliamentary debates on the proposed changes.
The committees briefed parliamentary leaders on the progress made so far in the constitutional review process and highlighted key areas addressed within the proposed amendments, which are aimed at strengthening governance structures, clarifying constitutional provisions, and advancing Somalia’s state-building process.
The leadership of both chambers welcomed the submission of the proposals and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the constitutional review process proceeds in an inclusive, transparent, and constitutional manner. They emphasized the importance of constructive parliamentary debate and broad consultation to reach consensus on amendments that reflect the aspirations of the Somali people.
The meeting marks an important step forward in Somalia’s ongoing constitutional reform efforts, as parliament prepares to deliberate on proposed changes that will shape the country’s political and institutional framework.
