UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting after Israel recognizes Somaliland.

The United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting on Monday following Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, a move that has triggered sharp diplomatic tensions and widespread condemnation from Somalia and key regional actors.

The urgent session comes at a particularly sensitive moment, just days before Somalia is due to formally assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, further elevating the political stakes surrounding the issue.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, confirmed the meeting on Saturday, saying discussions would focus on the political implications of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and the broader regional consequences of the decision.

“The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday following Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland,” Danon wrote on X. “We will not shy away from political debates. Israel will continue to act responsibly and with caution to strengthen cooperation with partners who contribute to regional stability.”

The move by Israel has sparked strong backlash from the Federal Government of Somalia, which has declared the recognition “null and void,” insisting that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of Somalia’s internationally recognized territory. Mogadishu argues that Israel’s decision violates international law and long-standing United Nations resolutions that uphold Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

The emergency meeting places the dispute squarely before the world’s most powerful diplomatic body, where Somalia is expected to push for a reaffirmation of existing UN resolutions and principles prohibiting unilateral recognition of breakaway regions. Somali officials are also expected to urge the Council to reject any actions that could undermine regional stability or set dangerous precedents elsewhere.

A Critical Diplomatic Moment

The timing of the meeting adds another layer of significance. On January 1, 2026, Somalia will assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for a one-month term. This role grants Mogadishu procedural influence over the Council’s agenda, meetings, and official statements, potentially allowing Somalia to elevate the issue to the forefront of international deliberations.

Analysts say Somalia’s upcoming presidency could strengthen its diplomatic hand as it seeks to rally international support against Israel’s recognition and reinforce global commitments to territorial integrity.

Somalia has repeatedly warned that recognizing Somaliland risks destabilizing the Horn of Africa, a region already grappling with security challenges, political fragility, and ongoing conflicts. Regional governments and international partners have also expressed concern that the move could inflame tensions and undermine years of diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving peace and stability.

As the Security Council prepares to meet, attention will be focused on whether the body will issue a unified response and how major powers will position themselves amid growing diplomatic pressure and competing geopolitical interests.
