UN Security Council reaffirms Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid international tensions

The United Nations Security Council has once again reiterated its unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

During a recent session, Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding at the UN, emphasized that the council’s position on Somalia remains unchanged and is firmly grounded in international law and the UN Charter. “The international community continues to stand with Somalia in upholding its territorial integrity and national unity,” Khiari stated.

The session comes amid heightened regional tensions following Israel’s controversial recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, a move strongly condemned by Somalia and several international actors. The UN Security Council stressed that any actions threatening Somalia’s unity and sovereignty could undermine regional stability and violate international law.

Somalia’s federal government has welcomed the Security Council’s statement, describing it as a clear affirmation of global support for the country’s territorial integrity. The government reiterated that it will continue engaging diplomatically with international partners to ensure the protection of Somalia’s sovereignty and prevent any attempts at illegal secession or external interference.

Diplomatic sources indicate that the reaffirmation from the UN comes at a critical time, as Somalia prepares to assume its rotating seat on the Security Council in early January 2026. This position will provide Mogadishu with an opportunity to influence international discussions, particularly those related to regional security and the protection of Somali territories.

The UN’s renewed backing is expected to strengthen Somalia’s diplomatic efforts, as the federal government continues to seek international support against moves that threaten national unity. Regional partners and allies are closely monitoring developments, emphasizing the importance of collective action to uphold the country’s sovereignty and maintain peace across the Horn of Africa.
