UN Security Council reaffirms Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid international tensions

The United Nations Security Council has once again reiterated its unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

During a recent session, Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding at the UN, emphasized that the council’s position on Somalia remains unchanged and is firmly grounded in international law and the UN Charter. “The international community continues to stand with Somalia in upholding its territorial integrity and national unity,” Khiari stated.

The session comes amid heightened regional tensions following Israel’s controversial recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, a move strongly condemned by Somalia and several international actors. The UN Security Council stressed that any actions threatening Somalia’s unity and sovereignty could undermine regional stability and violate international law.

Somalia’s federal government has welcomed the Security Council’s statement, describing it as a clear affirmation of global support for the country’s territorial integrity.
